A Note from David
I’ve been a musical comedy guy my whole life, from when I sang along to the Funny Girl original cast album using a marble pestle as a microphone to appearing on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof. However when I put pen to paper, it was writing “dirty little songs” for Naked Boys Singing inspired by and extensions of my true life experiences, layered with fantasy (as a note, I did not sleep with Tom Cruise but it was fun to go there in song).
Over the years, I’ve developed a bit of a reputation for being a little, shall we say, “free” regarding my sexuality, but in presenting Musical Comedy Whore! I would never have considered sharing such intimate details about my life with a “hey-look-what-I-did!” mentality…there had to be some reason to do it, some universal resonance. Friends and acquaintances have always seemed to feel comfortable talking to me about their little sexual peccadilloes, and I found that most of us struggle with the same things in regards to sex: shame, regret, low self-esteem, and constant beating down by organized religion and the conservative Right. And sometimes one lives through events that profoundly change them and set a trajectory for their life they never imagined.
Such is the story of Musical Comedy Whore! You may not have had my experiences, but anyone with an open mind and heart will identify with the journey I had to take, and if it makes you look at your own life with a little more love toward yourself, then I’ve done my job as an artist. If not, well…maybe you’ll laugh. First and foremost, I consider myself an entertainer and a storyteller. The language and situations may be TMI to some, but the struggle behind it all is the truth. My truth, and I hope to some degree…yours.
